Du Pré, Jacqueline

Du Pré, << doo PRAY, >> Jacqueline (1945-1987), an outstanding English cellist, made her debut in London at the age of 16. In 1973, she was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis, which eventually ended her concert and recording activities. Although her career only lasted a little more than a decade, she performed and recorded much of the major cello repertoire.

Du Pré was born on Jan. 26, 1945, in Oxford. She began regular cello lessons when she was 5 years old. Du Pré later studied with three famous cellists—William Pleeth in England, Paul Tortelier in Paris, and Mstislav Rostropovich in Moscow. She made her United States debut in 1965. In 1967, she married the Israeli pianist and conductor Daniel Barenboim. She gave many recitals with him and appeared as soloist with orchestras he conducted. Du Pré died on Oct. 19, 1987.
