Elman, Mischa

Elman, Mischa << MEE shuh >> (1891-1967), a Russian-American violinist, made his first public appearance in St. Petersburg in 1904 with great success, and then made a spectacular tour of Germany. Elman played his first concert in the United States in 1908, and became a U.S. citizen in 1923. He was born the son of a schoolmaster on Jan. 20, 1891, in Talnoye (now Talne, Ukraine), in what was then part of the Russian Empire. Elman’s father took him at age 6 to study at Odesa, and then at St. Petersburg with violinist Leopold Auer. Elman died on April 5, 1967.
