Farrar, Geraldine

Farrar, << fuh RAHR, >> Geraldine (1882-1967), an American soprano, enjoyed a brilliant career in opera and on the concert stage. Her striking dramatic and musical ability, coupled with her charm and personality, placed her among the outstanding American singers. She excelled in the role of Madama Butterfly.

She was born in Melrose, Massachusetts, and studied in Boston, Paris, and Berlin. She made her debut in Berlin in 1901 as Marguerite in Faust. She sang with the Metropolitan Opera Company from 1906 until she retired in 1922. Her autobiography, Such Sweet Compulsion, was published in 1938.
