Harnack, << HAHR nahk, >> Adolf von (1851-1930), was a German scholar of the New Testament. As a liberal Protestant theologian, he tried to show that Jesus was primarily a teacher, and was not “divine,” as Paul had taught. He wrote many books, including The Essence of Christianity (1904), Epistles of Saint Paul (1926), Luther and the Reformation (1928), and Studies in the History of the New Testament (1931).
Harnack was born at Dorpat (now Tartu), Estonia. He taught at the universities of Leipzig, Giessen, and Marburg. In 1888, he joined the faculty at the University of Berlin, where he gained an international reputation.
