Hayes, Patrick Joseph

Hayes, Patrick Joseph (1867-1938), became archbishop of New York in 1919. In 1924, Pope Pius XI made Hayes a cardinal. Hayes’s most impressive achievement was the development of a vigorous New York Catholic Charities organization. He also is remembered for the deep loyalty that he inspired among both clergy and lay people.

Hayes was born in New York City on Nov. 20, 1867. He was ordained a priest in 1892. Hayes became secretary to Auxiliary Bishop of New York John Farley in 1895. He served as chancellor of the Archdiocese of New York when Farley was its archbishop. In 1919, he succeeded Farley as archbishop. Hayes died on Sept. 4, 1938.
