Johnson, Thomas (1732-1819), a statesman and jurist, helped lead the state of Maryland during the Revolutionary War period. Before the war, he worked against the Stamp Act. He represented Maryland in the Continental Congress from 1774 to 1777, and nominated George Washington to lead the Revolutionary Army in 1775. Johnson served as the first governor of the state, and held that office three terms. In 1791, President Washington appointed him to the United States Supreme Court. Johnson was born in Calvert County, Maryland.
