Kaltenborn, << KAWL tuhn bawrn, >> H. V. (1878-1965), an American radio commentator, gained recognition as the father of his profession. He delivered his first radio broadcast in 1922, during the days of the crystal set. He was born Hans von Kaltenborn in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, and served in the Spanish-American War. He joined the Brooklyn Eagle in 1902, but left in 1905 to enter Harvard University. He graduated in 1909, and returned to the newspaper. In 1924, he became the first regularly scheduled radio commentator. He began his network news broadcasts in 1930. Kaltenborn was the author of Fifty Fabulous Years (1950).
