Knox, Philander << noks, fih LAN duhr >> Chase, (1853-1921), a Republican political leader and statesman, served as secretary of state from 1909 to 1913 under President William Howard Taft. His efforts to encourage and protect United States investments abroad were sometimes criticized as “dollar diplomacy.”
Knox was born in Brownsville, Pennsylvania. He served as United States attorney general from 1901 to 1904. Knox represented Pennsylvania in the U.S. Senate from 1904 to 1909, and from 1917 to 1921.
