Leblanc, Nicolas

Leblanc, Nicolas (1742-1806), a French physician, surgeon, and industrial chemist, melted together sodium sulfate, limestone, and coal to produce soda economically. In 1794, the French revolutionary government seized Leblanc’s patent and his factory. Leblanc received no payment for his property or patent. Although many persons made fortunes by using his process, Leblanc lived in poverty.
