Leigh-Mallory, << LEE MAL uh ree, >> Sir Trafford L. (1892-1944), a British air chief marshal, won fame during World Wars I and II. In 1942, he became head of the Royal Air Force Fighter Command. The next year, he was made commander in chief of the Allied Expeditionary Air Force. This force supplied the “air umbrella” for the Allied invasion of Europe in June 1944. Leigh-Mallory was killed in an airplane accident while traveling to a new post as chief of the Southeast Asia Command. He was born in Mobberley, Cheshire, England.
