Loewy, Raymond Fernand

Loewy, << LOH ih, >> Raymond Fernand (1893-1986), was an industrial designer for corporations in the United States and other countries. He began as a fashion illustrator in 1919, and started designing when a British manufacturer asked him to improve the looks of his duplicating machine. Loewy became art director for Westinghouse Electric Corporation in 1929. The same year, he started the Raymond Loewy Corporation (later Raymond Loewy/William Snaith, Inc.), an industrial design organization, and served as its president and board chairman. Loewy was born on Nov. 5, 1893, in Paris and became a U.S. citizen in 1938. He died on July 14, 1986.
