Metaxas, Joannes

Metaxas, << `meht` ahk SAHS, >> Joannes (1871- 1941), was dictator of Greece from 1936 until his death. He became an army officer in 1890. He studied in a German military academy from 1899 to 1903, and became an admirer of German militarism. In 1934, he formed a Greek fascist-monarchist party. This group helped him become dictator in 1936. Metaxas admired the Italian dictator Benito Mussolini but led Greece against the Italian invaders in 1940. Metaxas was born in Cephalonia.
