Schick, Bela, << shihk, BAY luh >> (1877-1967), was an authority on the diseases of childhood. He became best known for the schick test, a skin test developed in 1913 for determining whether or not a person is likely to catch diphtheria. He also did important research on such children’s diseases as scarlet fever, serum sickness, tuberculosis, and infantile diarrhea.
Schick worked in Vienna with Theodor Escherich and Clemens von Pirquet, and became an authority on scarlet fever. With Von Pirquet, he laid the foundation of our knowledge of serum sickness and allergy. He was born in Boglar, Hungary.
