Schofield, John McAllister

Schofield, John McAllister << SKOH feeld, jon muh KAL ih stuhr >> (1831-1906), commanded the Union forces that captured Wilmington, North Carolina, during the American Civil War (1861-1865). He also successfully defended Franklin, Tennessee, in 1864. He was born in Chautauqua County, New York, on Sept. 29, 1831, and graduated from the United States Military Academy at West Point. After the war he served as secretary of war, and from 1888 to 1895 as U.S. Army commanding general. He died on March 4, 1906.
