Shannon, Monica

Shannon, Monica (?-1965), an American author, received the Newbery medal in 1935 for Dobry, the story of a Bulgarian boy who longed to be an artist. Shannon was born in Belleville, Ontario, Canada, but grew up on a California ranch. She made friends with Bulgarian immigrants who worked on the ranch, and stories she heard from them became the basis for her book Dobry. Shannon also wrote California Fairy Tales (1926) and Goose-Grass Rhymes (1930). She was a librarian in the Los Angeles Public Library from 1916 to 1925.
