Theiler, Max

Theiler, << TAY lur, >> Max (1899-1972), a South African research physician and bacteriologist, received the 1951 Nobel Prize in medicine for his discoveries concerning yellow fever. Theiler proved in 1927 that a virus, and not bacteria, caused yellow fever. He studied the disease in monkeys and mice, and produced a vaccine against yellow fever in 1937. Theiler was born in Pretoria, South Africa, on Jan. 30, 1899. He joined the Rockefeller Foundation in 1930, and became a director in 1951. He died on Aug. 11, 1972.
