Von Kármán << von KAHR mahn >>, Theodore (1881-1963), became one of the outstanding scientists of the 1900’s. His primary interest was aeronautics, but he wrote nearly 150 books and articles on many aspects of engineering, physics, and mathematics. Von Kármán helped found important aeronautical institutions and agencies, including the Guggenheim Aeronautical and Jet Propulsion Laboratories at the California Institute of Technology and the U.S. Air Force Scientific Advisory Board. Von Kármán was born in Budapest, Hungary. He became a U.S. citizen in 1936.
