Winant, John Gilbert (1889-1947), was United States ambassador to Great Britain from 1941 to 1946. Winant served as a Republican in the New Hampshire House of Representatives from 1917 to 1921, and again from 1923 to 1925. He served as a state senator from 1921 to 1923, and as governor from 1925 to 1927, and 1931 to 1935. Winant supported social security, the abolition of child labor, old-age insurance, and a shorter work week. In 1935, he became the first chairman of the U.S. Social Security Board. He was named director of the International Labour Organization in 1938. Winant represented the United States on the European Advisory Commission from 1943 to 1946. In 1946, he represented the United States on the Economic and Social Council of the United Nations. Winant was born in New York City.
