Zimbalist, Efrem (1889-1985), was a well-known violinist. He made his debut in Berlin in 1907 and his first appearance in the United States in 1911. Later he became a United States citizen. In 1941 he was appointed director of the Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia.
Zimbalist was born in Rostov, Russia. His son, Efrem Zimbalist, Jr., and his granddaughter Stephanie Zimbalist became popular American television actors.
