Bryan Guy Adams was born on Nov. 5, 1959, in Kingston, Ontario. He quit school at the age of 16. In 1977, he formed a composing partnership with Canadian songwriter Jim Vallance. Their success led to a recording contract for Adams in the United States. His first two albums had little success, but his third album, Cuts Like a Knife (1983), was a hit. Reckless (1984) became his first number-one album and established him as an internationally popular solo performer.
Adams’s hit singles include “Straight from the Heart” (1983), “Run to You” (1984), “Summer of ’69” (1985), “Heaven” (1985), “Heat of the Night” (1987), “Please Forgive Me” (1993), “Have You Ever Loved a Woman?” (1995), “Back to You” (1997), “Don’t Give Up” (2000), “Here I Am” (2002), and “Open Road” (2004). He and the South African music producer Robert John Lange wrote the lyrics for “(Everything I Do) I Do for You,” the theme song for the motion picture Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves (1991).
