Bacall, Lauren (1924-2014), was an American motion-picture and stage actress who gained fame as the co-star of Humphrey Bogart . She was married to Bogart from 1945 until his death in 1957.
Bacall was born on Sept. 16, 1924, in New York City. Her real name was Betty Joan Perske. Bacall studied at the American Academy of Dramatic Arts and made her acting debut on Broadway in 1942. She became a star in her first motion picture, To Have and Have Not (1944), co-starring Bogart. She also appeared with Bogart in The Big Sleep (1946), Dark Passage (1947), and Key Largo (1948). In her early film work, Bacall played sultry, romantic women. As her career progressed, she appeared as a mature woman of the world. Her later films include How to Marry a Millionaire (1953), Written on the Wind (1956), Harper (1966), Murder on the Orient Express (1974), The Shootist (1976), The Mirror Has Two Faces (1996), Dogville (2003), Birth (2004), and The Walker (2007).
Bacall returned to the Broadway stage in 1959 in the comic fantasy Goodbye, Charley. She also appeared in the comedy Cactus Flower (1965). She earned praise as the faded film star Margo Channing in the Broadway musical Applause (1970). She also starred as strong-willed television personality Tess Harding in the musical Woman of the Year (1981). Bacall wrote three autobiographies, Lauren Bacall By Myself (1978), Now (1994), and By Myself and Then Some (2005). Bacall died on Aug. 12, 2014.
