Bergen, Candice (1946-…), an American actress, became best known as the star of the popular television comedy series “Murphy Brown.” The program ran from 1988 to 1998. Bergen played a witty and often sarcastic television reporter in the series. Bergen has also appeared in a number of motion pictures and is an accomplished professional photojournalist.
“Murphy Brown” became popular for its fast-paced dialogue and abundance of comic characters. It sometimes gained the news spotlight for dealing with controversial issues, such as Murphy Brown’s decision to have a child while unmarried. In addition, many real-life news personalities made guest appearances on the show.
Candice Patricia Bergen was born on May 8, 1946, in Beverly Hills, California. Her father was Edgar Bergen, a famous ventriloquist. She dropped out of college at the age of 19 and made her movie debut in The Group (1966). Bergen played featured roles in many films from the 1960’s to the early 1980’s. Her other films include The Sand Pebbles (1966), Carnal Knowledge (1971), Oliver’s Story (1978), Starting Over (1979), Gandhi (1982), Stick (1985), The Women (2008), and The Romantics (2010). From 2002 to 2004, Bergen also appeared in several episodes of the cable television series “Sex and the City” (1998-2004) as a magazine editor. She reprised the role in a 2008 motion picture based on the series. In 2005, Bergen joined the cast of the TV dramatic series “Boston Legal” (2004-2008).
Bergen married French film director Louis Malle in 1980. He died in 1995. Bergen wrote an autobiography, Knock Wood (1984).
