Bing, Dave (1943-…), ranks among the finest guards in basketball history. Bing played for 12 seasons in the National Basketball Association (NBA), where he was a dominant shooter and playmaker. Bing averaged 20.3 points a game during his professional career. He also had 5,397 assists.
David Bing was born on Nov. 24, 1943, in Washington, D.C. He was a star guard at Syracuse University from 1963 to 1966. He became an All-American his senior year and finished fifth in the country in scoring. The Detroit Pistons of the NBA drafted him, and he was named the league’s Rookie of the Year for the 1966-1967 season. In the 1967-1968 season, Bing led the NBA in points scored, with 2,142.
The Pistons traded Bing to the Washington Bullets in 1975. He played two seasons for Washington and then was traded to the Boston Celtics in 1977. He retired in 1978 and was elected to the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in 1990.
After his retirement, Bing became a successful businessman in Detroit . In May 2009, he was elected mayor of Detroit to complete the term of former mayor Kwame Kilpatrick, who resigned in 2008 after being convicted in two criminal cases. In November 2009, Bing won election to a full term as mayor. Bing did not seek reelection in 2013.
