Costner, Kevin (1955-…), is an American actor whose good looks, likable manner, and natural style of delivery made him one of the most popular motion-picture stars of his time. His hit films cover a wide range, including science-fiction dramas, Westerns, modern romantic comedies, and fantasies. Costner also directs and produces. He won the 1990 Academy Award for best director for the movie Dances With Wolves, a Western in which he also starred. He also has won several Emmy and Golden Globe awards for his acting and directing.
Costner was born on Jan. 18, 1955, in Compton, California. He graduated from California State University at Fullerton in 1978 with a bachelor’s degree in marketing. He played minor roles in a number of films during the early 1980’s, finally becoming a star with his performance as federal agent Eliot Ness in the crime drama The Untouchables (1987).
Costner’s other films include No Way Out (1987); Bull Durham (1988); Field of Dreams (1989); Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves (1990); JFK (1991); The Bodyguard (1992); Wyatt Earp (1994); Waterworld (1995); Tin Cup (1996); Message in a Bottle (1999); and Thirteen Days (2000). He also acted in the films Rumor Has It… and The Upside of Anger (both 2005); Mr. Brooks (2007); Swing Vote (2008); The Company Men (2010); Man of Steel (2013) and its sequel, Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice (2016); Black or White and Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit (both 2014); McFarland, USA (2015); and Hidden Figures (2016), among others. He directed and starred in The Postman (1997) and Open Range (2003).
Costner also starred in the television miniseries Hatfields and McCoys (2012) and the TV series “Yellowstone,” which began in 2018.
