Drexler, Clyde

Drexler, Clyde (1962-…), was one of the most exciting guards in the National Basketball Association (NBA). Drexler is known for his agility, though at 6 feet 7 inches (201 centimeters) in height, he is tall for his position. He also gained fame for his powerful running dunk shots. Drexler helped lead the Houston Rockets to an NBA championship in the 1994-1995 season.

Clyde Austin Drexler was born on June 22, 1962, in New Orleans. He attended the University of Houston for three years, leaving after his junior year in 1983 to enter the NBA draft. He was drafted in the first round by the Portland Trail Blazers. Drexler played with Portland until he was traded to Houston early in 1995. By the time he left Portland, he held the team’s career records for scoring, rebounding, and steals. Drexler played on the United States “Dream Team” that won the basketball gold medal at the 1992 Summer Olympic Games. Drexler retired as a player in 1998 and became the men’s basketball coach at the University of Houston. He resigned as coach in 2000. Drexler was elected to the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in 2004.
