Ewing, Patrick (1962-…), ranks among the leading centers in college and professional basketball history. He became known for his all-around game. Ewing played most of his professional career with the New York Knicks of the National Basketball Association (NBA). He holds the team’s career records for scoring, rebounding, blocked shots, and steals.
Patrick Aloysius Ewing was born on Aug. 5, 1962, in Kingston, Jamaica. His family moved to the United States in 1975. He attended Georgetown University from 1981 to 1985, leading his team to the national collegiate championship in the 1983-1984 season. He was named collegiate Player of the Year in 1984-1985.
The Knicks selected Ewing as the first player taken in the 1985 NBA draft. He was the league’s Rookie of the Year for 1985-1986. Ewing won gold medals in the Summer Olympic Games as a member of the U.S. basketball team in 1984, as a college player, and in 1992, as a professional. In 2000, Ewing was traded to the Seattle SuperSonics. Ewing joined the Orlando Magic in 2001. He retired as a player in 2002 and became an assistant coach with the Washington Wizards of the NBA. Ewing was an assistant coach with the Houston Rockets from 2003 to 2006. He joined the Orlando Magic as an assistant coach in 2007. Ewing served as Georgetown’s head men’s basketball coach from 2017 to 2023.
Ewing was elected to the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in 2008. Ewing’s son, Patrick Ewing, Jr., played college basketball at Indiana University and Georgetown University.
