Hawn, Goldie

Hawn, Goldie (1945-…), is an American motion-picture actress best known for her comic roles as zany young women. Hawn won the 1969 Academy Award for best supporting actress for her performance in Cactus Flower, her first film.

Goldie Jeanne Hawn was born on Nov. 21, 1945, in Washington, D.C. She began her career as a professional dancer, dancing in New York City during the mid-1960’s before landing a supporting role on the television series “Good Morning, World” in 1967. From 1968 to 1970, Hawn gained national popularity as a featured performer on the TV comedy-variety show “Rowan & Martin’s Laugh-In.”

Hawn continued her film career with such movies as There’s a Girl in My Soup (1970), Butterflies Are Free (1972), The Sugarland Express (1974), and Shampoo (1975). She produced and starred in Private Benjamin (1980), in which she portrayed a young upper-class woman who entered the Army after her husband’s death. Hawn’s other movies include Housesitter (1992), Bird on a Wire (1990), Death Becomes Her (1992), The First Wives Club (1996), Everybody Says I Love You (1996), The Out-of-Towners (1999), Town & Country (2001), and The Banger Sisters (2002). Kate Hudson, Hawn’s daughter, is also a movie actress. Hawn wrote an autobiography, A Lotus Grows in the Mud (2005).
