Jones, Sam (1933-2021), was an outstanding scorer for the Boston Celtics of the National Basketball Association (NBA). Jones starred for the Celtics for 12 seasons, from 1957 to 1969. During that period, Boston won 10 NBA championships.
Jones, a guard, was 6 feet 4 inches (193 centimeters) tall. He averaged 17.7 points a game for his regular season career and 18.9 points in playoff competition. He was one of the most accurate field goal and free throw shooters of his day.
Samuel Jones was born in Wilmington, North Carolina, on June 24, 1933. He played basketball for North Carolina Central College, graduating in 1957. The Celtics selected him in the first round of the 1957 NBA draft. Jones was inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in 1984. He died on Dec. 30, 2021.
