Walters, Barbara

Walters, Barbara (1931-2022), became one of the most successful journalists in the history of American television. She also gained recognition for her skillful interviews of celebrities on her television specials. Walters was co-producer and co-host of the ABC daytime news and entertainment program “The View” from 1997 until her retirement in 2014.

Walters was born in Boston on Sept. 25, 1931. She graduated from Sarah Lawrence College in 1953 and became a TV newswriter and producer in New York City. She was a writer for the NBC daily TV program “Today” from 1961 to 1964, when she became a regular member of the show. She served as a co-host of “Today” from 1974 to 1976. Walters was co-anchor of the “ABC Evening News” from 1976 to 1978. She telecast her first “Barbara Walters Special” in 1976. From 1979 to 2004, Walters served either as host or as co-host of the popular ABC weekly news program “20/20.” Walters wrote the book How to Talk with Practically Anybody About Practically Anything (1970). She died on Dec. 30, 2022.
