Albert II (1934-…) became king of Belgium in 1993, after the death of his brother Baudouin. Albert was born on June 6, 1934, in Brussels. During World War II (1939-1945), the German army invaded Belgium. Albert and his brother and sister were deported to Germany. In 1959, Albert married Donna Paola Ruffo di Calabria of Italy. In 2013, Albert gave up the throne at the age of 79. His eldest son, Prince Philippe, became king.
