The United States established a military camp in Angeles after the Spanish-American War of 1898. The base was named Clark Air Base in 1918 after Major Harold M. Clark, an early American pilot. Angeles was severely damaged in 1991 by an eruption of the Mount Pinatubo volcano. Clark Air Base was buried under ash, and the United States abandoned it.
