Bizerte (pop. 94,509) is a Tunisian port on the Mediterranean Sea. It was founded by the Phoenicians. Bizerte has a fine natural harbor and strong military defenses. A naval base, built by the French, is on Lake Bizerte near the open sea.
Industries include ship repair yards, metalworking plants, olive oil plants, flour mills, fish-processing plants, brick and tile works, and an oil refinery. Oil and farm products are shipped from Bizerte.
