Bolingbroke, Viscount (1678-1751), was an English statesman and writer. He became foreign secretary in 1710 and negotiated the Peace of Utrecht in 1713. He also tried to secure the succession to the throne for James Francis Edward Stuart, also known as the Old Pretender. After the death of Queen Anne in 1714, the new king, George I, dismissed Bolingbroke, who fled to France. He returned to England in 1723 and spent his remaining years writing.
Bolingbroke was born on Sept. 16, 1678, in London. His given and family name was Henry St. John. He was educated at Eton College, near London, and at Oxford University. He died on Dec. 12, 1751.
