Bose, Satyendra Nath (1894-1974), was an Indian physicist who, with Albert Einstein, developed a system of statistical quantum mechanics now known as Bose-Einstein statistics. This system of statistics applies to particles not limited to single occupancy of the same quantum space. These particles are called bosons, after Bose.
Bose published a paper on Max Planck’s black body law, Planck’s Law and the Hypothesis of Light Quanta (1924). This paper led him into work with Einstein. Bose also worked on statistical mechanics, the electromagnetic properties of the ionosphere, theories of X-ray crystallography, and unified field theory.
Bose was born in Calcutta (now Kolkata), India, and worked at the universities of Calcutta and Dacca. He was named National Professor of India in 1958.
