Brolga is a crane that lives in most coastal parts of Australia except southwestern and southeastern Australia. It is also known as the native companion because the bird was seen by early white settlers near Aboriginal camps. The brolga is a graceful, silver-gray bird. It stands about 4 feet (1.2 meters) tall and has a wingspan of just over 7 feet (2 meters). Its call is usually a deep trumpet sound.
Brolgas live in pairs or flocks on plains or swamps. Like other cranes, they perform dances. Brolgas eat insects, small animals, and plants. Sometimes they damage crops. Their nests are usually platforms of grass or reeds in swamps. Their eggs are creamy white with a few purplish-red spots.
