Cartland, Barbara (1901-2000), a British novelist, became one of the most prolific writers of all time. From 1925 to shortly before her death, she published more than 700 novels, all love stories set between 1790 and 1890. Cartland also wrote several biographical books on subjects ranging from her own parents to the English King Charles II and Josephine, Empress of France. Cartland’s other works include four volumes of autobiography, books of poems and prayers, and books on etiquette and beauty and health. She also wrote plays for stage and radio.
Mary Barbara Hamilton Cartland was born on July 9, 1901, in Birmingham, England. In 1991, Queen Elizabeth II made her Dame Commander of the Order of the British Empire. Cartland died on May 21, 2000.
