Chandigarh (pop. 1,055,450) is a union territory in northern India. It shares its northern and western borders with the state of Punjab, and its eastern and southern borders with the state of Haryana.
The territory consists of the capital, Chandigarh city, and 22 villages in the area surrounding it. It covers an area of 44 square miles (114 square kilometers). Corn, wheat, potatoes, and rice are the main crops. Industries produce hosiery and knitting machine needles, electric meters, antibiotics, soft drinks, and cardboard. Other industries in Chandigarh manufacture door fittings, radios, insecticides, furniture, textiles, automobile parts, and paints.
