Changsha

Changsha (pop. 3,400,000) is the capital of Hunan Province in southeastern China. Changsha, also spelled Ch’ang-sha, is a major trading and industrial city. It is situated on the Xiang River.

Factories in Changsha produce brassware, glass, machine tools, and textiles. Riverboats handle trade between Changsha and Wuhan to the north. The BeijingGuangzhou railway runs through Changsha. The Chinese leader Mao Zedong attended schools in Changsha and was involved in his first political activities there between 1911 and 1921.
