Christie, Linford

Christie, Linford (1960-…), a British athlete, won the grand slam of international 100-meter sprint titles. He held the Olympic, Continental, European, and World titles at the same time. Christie became the world champion after finishing the race in 9.87 seconds at the World Athletics Championships in Stuttgart, Germany, in 1993. He won the gold medal for the United Kingdom in the men’s 100-meter sprint at the Barcelona Olympics in 1992. At 32, Christie was the oldest athlete, by four years, ever to win the medal.

Linford Cicero Christie was born in St. Andrew’s, Jamaica, on April 2, 1960. His family immigrated to the United Kingdom when he was 7 years old. They settled in London. He began his athletic career in 1986. In 1993, Christie helped found a sports management amd promotions company. He retired from major international track competition in 1997.

In 1999, Christie tested positive for performance-enhancing drugs at a meet he was competing in for personal enjoyment. Track authorities suspended him from competition for two years. During the 2000’s, he concentrated on operating his company and coaching.
