Craigavon, Lord (1871-1940), James Craig, was the first prime minister of Northern Ireland. He held the office from 1921 until his death. He favored maintaining the union between Ireland and the United Kingdom. He was elected a Unionist member of Parliament in 1906. In the coalition government of 1916 he was treasurer of the Household, and in 1919 he became parliamentary secretary to the minister of pensions. In 1920, he became parliamentary and financial secretary to the Admiralty. He was born in Craigavon in Ulster, Northern Ireland, and educated at Edinburgh University, Scotland.
