Crome, John (1768-1821), was one of the great English landscape painters. The countryside of the county of Norfolk inspired many of his landscapes, as did the countryside of Belgium and France, which he visited in 1814.
Crome was born on Dec. 22, 1768, in Norwich, England, where he worked as an errand boy. Later, he was an assistant to a house painter. He also taught drawing. In 1803, he was one of the founders of the Norwich Society of Artists. Later, Crome exhibited his work at the Royal Academy in London. He died on April 22, 1821.
