Evatt, Herbert Vere (1894-1965), was an Australian statesman, politician, and lawyer who gained a worldwide reputation for his approach to world politics. In 1948 and 1949, he was president of the General Assembly of the United Nations.
Evatt was also a powerful leader in Australian politics. Many experts consider that the finest period of his career came between 1941 and 1949, when he was attorney general and minister for external affairs. During this period, he steered Australian foreign policy into world awareness. He was deputy prime minister from 1946 to 1949.
Evatt was born on April 30, 1894, in East Maitland, in New South Wales. He was educated at the University of Sydney. He entered the New South Wales parliament in 1925. In 1930, he was appointed judge of the High Court. He entered the federal Parliament in 1940. In 1951, he became leader of the Labor Party. He retired from politics in 1960 to become chief justice of New South Wales. He died in Canberra on Nov. 2, 1965.
