Flannel flower grows in many parts of Australia and New Zealand. These plants have a central disk of small, woolly flowers surrounded by a ring of woolly bracts (modified leaves). The bracts are white with delicate green tips.
The two largest and most attractive varieties of flannel flowers grow on the exposed sandy plateaus of eastern Australia and on the sandy moor of Western Australia. The east coast flannel flower is a shrub about 3 feet (1 meter) high, with woolly, gray divided leaves and flower heads like flannel daisies. Each of the flower heads grows to about 3 inches (75 millimeters) in diameter. The west coast flannel flower is most attractive, with a central disk of creamy-white and feathery bracts.
