Flinders Ranges, in South Australia, stretch northward from Port Augusta to beyond Leigh Creek. The whole region lies more than 500 feet (150 meters) above sea level. Saint Mary’s Peak, on the northern edge of the Wilpena Pound, rises in height to nearly 4,000 feet (1,200 meters) above sea level. Wind and water have eroded the reddish rocks of the ranges, giving them sharp outlines.
