Florist

Florist is a person or business associated with the sale of flowers, plants, and related products. This merchandise may include plant bulbs and seeds, potting soil, and various plant care products. The owner or manager of a floral business often employs floral designers, who are specially trained in the art of arranging flowers. Some floral designers are trained to create arrangements for special events such as weddings or galas.

In the majority of florists’ shops, the flowers and plants come from commercial growers and nurseries. Some of these growers and nurseries operate locally, but most operate internationally. However, a small number of florists have gardens or greenhouses in which they grow some of the flowers or plants they sell. Customers may buy flowers or plants at the shop or call the florist and order flowers to be delivered. Many florists belong to an association that forms a pool of florists in various countries throughout the world. If a florist belonging to such an association receives an order for a delivery in another town or city, he or she sends the order to a member florist in that location. The order for a delivery may be transmitted either by telephone or by computer.

Special training is not required for a career as a florist, although it is highly recommended. Training in business management and in the care and handling of flowers is particularly recommended. Courses that teach sales techniques and store management are also helpful. Many people prepare to become florists by studying floriculture, the science of growing and caring for ornamental plants. Some schools offer courses in floriculture. Many privately run schools offer classes in the art of floral design. Floral designers may complete various education programs to become a Certified Floral Designer (CFD). Floral designers with exceptional artistry may become Accredited In Floral Design (AIFD). Certification and accreditation is offered through the American Institute of Floral Designers. A number of state floral associations also offer certified florist programs.
