Fynbos is the name given to a wide variety of plants native to South Africa’s Cape Mountains Region. This area contains thousands of species (kinds) of plants found nowhere else. Most fynbos plants are shrubs. They typically have narrow leaves that give them a delicate appearance. The name fynbos comes from the Dutch words fijn (delicate) and bosch (bush).
Some fynbos plants are cultivated around the world. For example, certain plants of the genus Euryops are prized for their large, yellow, daisylike flowers. These plants can survive for a long time without water but are killed by frost. They grow best on well-drained soil in a sunny position. One popular variety is Euryops tenuissimus.
