Galway, James (1939-…), is an Irish musician who has become one of the most famous flutists of his time. He was born in Belfast, Northern Ireland, and played the flute and pennywhistle in a local band. At the age of 10, he won an Irish flute competition. Galway left school at 14, but later won scholarships to study in London and Paris. He became principal flutist with the London Symphony Orchestra and the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra. From 1967 to 1973, he was principal flutist with the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra. Since 1973, he has gained an international reputation as a soloist. Queen Elizabeth II knighted Galway in 2001, and he became known as Sir James Galway.
