Gippsland is a district in eastern Victoria, Australia. It is named after Sir George Gipps, a former governor of New South Wales. Gippsland extends from the Great Dividing Range to the coast and from Western Port Bay to the New South Wales border.
Farmers in the region raise sheep for wool. Beef and dairy cattle are also important. Commercial quantities of natural gas and oil were discovered off the Gippsland coast in the 1960’s.
