Gregory, Augustus (1819-1905), led four major expeditions of exploration in Australia. In 1846, he explored the country north of Perth, Western Australia. In 1848, he explored the area between the Murchison and Gascoyne rivers, in Western Australia. In 1855, he journeyed from a base near present-day Darwin, Northern Territory, to the source of the Victoria River and then east to Brisbane, Queensland. In 1857, he searched for traces of the explorer Ludwig Leichhardt.
