Gulf of Carpentaria, an arm of the Arafura Sea, stretches into northern Australia. It is about 300 miles (480 kilometers) wide and 400 miles (640 kilometers) long. The waters are shallow in most areas. Mudflats and mangrove swamps lie along its shores.
